My maternal grandmother emigrated from Warsaw as an illiterate, 18 year-old corset- maker. She married in New York, bore seven children – two of whom died during the 1918-19 influenza pandemic – and made sure that the family always had a roof over its head, clothes on their backs, and food on the table.
