Blanket Stories: Transportation Object, Generous Ones, Trek

A sculpture commissioned for the Haub Family Galleries at the Tacoma Art Museum

We are received in blankets and depart this world in blankets, too. This blanket is given in honor of my grandmother, Maxine Maybee (Húsdö). At 93, she was the ninth-oldest traditional speaker in our tribe; Seneca was her first language. We are from the turtle clan, a birthright passed down by our mothers. With my grandfather, Arthur Maybee, she had seven kids, including my mother, Romayne Watt. My mom moved west with girlfriends to be a nurse at the University of Washington Hospital, and later worked in Indian Education for 27 years.
