Blanket Stories: Transportation Object, Generous Ones, Trek

A sculpture commissioned for the Haub Family Galleries at the Tacoma Art Museum

When you grow up in the midwest, you always have a wool blanket in the trunk of your car in case you are stranded in a blizzard. The plaid lap robe is a fixture in my mind. I can’t imagine a car without one. This one is red, green, and white and was woven in Troy, Michigan—where I am sure it was purchased one summer when my grandparents were escaping the heat of St. Louis. A hand-stitched Schlapp label signifies that it went to boarding school with my dad. Later, it went to camp with me. And then, it moved into the trunk of the family car—which I eventually drove to college. It has since moved from car to car. It then moved into the radio flyer wagon for picnics in the park with our daughter and wrapping her up when she is wet and cold playing in the water at Irving Park in Portland.
