Blanket Stories: Transportation Object, Generous Ones, Trek

A sculpture commissioned for the Haub Family Galleries at the Tacoma Art Museum

This blanket represents the quilt gifted to me by my grandmother’s best friend. Her name was Helen Sayles, and she was a lifelong resident of Chicago and a friend of my grandma’s since girlhood. It was made by Helen’s sister for their mother in the 1930s. I treasure it because for me it is representative of the larger connectedness between us, across families, and across generations. Plus, Helen was a hoot and an extraordinary example to me. Extremely strong, independent, funny, and insightful. This quilt keeps me connected to her.
