I am a descendant of German-Scot ranchers and educators, Wyoming homesteaders, Seneca proto-feminists, the turtle clan, Iroquois iron workers and a grandfather who lost his sight as a result of a bad batch of moonshine and who later became an expert at chair-caning. I have a soft spot for the lap of antique rocking chairs caned by my grandfather, as well as Picasso’s Still Life With Chair Caning (1912).
